Taking a Break….

…it turns out that undergoing a major home renovation adds some stress…

…go figure..

…so for the next few weeks, I’m taking a blogging break.  I have to find a few things to let go of.

Believe me, I’m thankful for each of the 80-200 people who decide every day that what I have to write about is good enough to read, and I’ve had fun getting to know a bunch of you through comments and your emails to me.

Don’t forget about me, I will be back….I just need to spend my energy on keeping things as normal as I can right now, and creating memories about this major event in our life….!

Linking Love – for creativity

I’m still away from home, and linking to favorite sites I like to visit.

Today is all about where I go to be creatively inspired

craft

I could lose hours at this site.  Lots of ideas ranging from the very simple-can-be-done-in-an-evening to much more complicated.

burda

The folks over at Burda have done something very wonderful on their site – they have posted a User Creations section where people can upload their attempts at Burda creations, or just post things they’ve made up.  Loads of creative energy here!

Linking Love….more blogs to share

I’m still away from home, so here are some more links to blogs I try to read fairly often….

Carla is a childhood friend – we’ve not seen each other in over 20 years I’m sure and have just recently hooked up again on-line.

Carla writes an interesting blog for moms who never thought they would be living like a single mom, even though they are married….her husband travels alot and that leaves most things around the house and 4 kids being homeschooled, her direct responsibility.

Foul language meter ranks a bit high on this one, but yours might too, if within 24 hours you went from an expectant father to a single one.

Matt Logelin’s wife Liz had a normal pregnancy and delivered the delightful Madeline to a proud and first-time father.  Within 24 hours Liz died from a heart related complication.

Now Matt struggles with single parenthood and writes about his day to day happenings….just recently he has started a foundation to help other single-by-death parents….it’s worth reading…

Linking Love….

While I’m out of town for a few days, I thought I’d take a post or two and add some linking love to sites that I like to visit….

Check them out, you might find a new read!

It’s hard to not fall in love with Ree’s city-girl-now-countrified life.

I’ve been reading about Barb ever since she febreezed her dog….She is a busy Nana who has started a sewing business on the side.  She’s also trying to quit smoking right now, so if you have a minute, drop by and leave her an encouraging word.

Repurposing a Window blind – part II

I also had this roman blind sample kicking around….it had gotten pretty dirty, faded and just started looking yukky on display, so I brought it home and subjected it to my scissors…

There will be 6 other ladies from across Canada with me at a Sales convention in Dallas next week, and since we all spend alot of time in our cars, I made one of these for everyone!

I found 6 different vintage buttons, so they are all a little bit different, but useful just the same!

Repurposing a Window Blind

I have a great part time job as a Sales Rep for a Window Blind company, and so from time to time, I end up with sample blinds that have been discontinued…..I hate tossing them in the trash compactor, so I’ve been thinking of ways to re-use them.

Here I took a standard CELLULAR type window blind, spent a few minutes cutting it up and voilà, a color co-ordinated wine bottle insulator….I have no idea how effective it is, but hey, it’s cute!

Tackle It Tuesday – The Reno Begins

(I’ve deleted the house photo for security reasons…)
The process began this weekend…..with a pound or two of a hammer, the basement walls began to crumble.

dsc02524

We gave HBI the first crack at the wall…

We removed one wall to make it easier to get the big items out of the utility room...the freezer, the washer / dryer etc.

From there, everything was moved out of the basement, onto the main floor, and into the garage and Shop.

I have no idea what happened to the flash in this photo, but it was the only one I took as the boxes began to pile up...

We will be out of the house for approximately 6 weeks, as the house is lifted, the foundation ripped out, and a new basement poured….

I have started a pile upstairs in the dining room of the ‘things we will need for 6 weeks’.  What has struck me  is, if my pile of ‘essentials’ is so small, what the heck is the rest of the junk in my house for???

6weeks

PoLL:  Leave your answers in the comments….

If you were packing for 6 weeks, what would you consider as ‘essentials’?

I’m not sure how much I’ll be posting through this, but I’ll work to keep you all informed!

Hey Tackle it Tuesday readers – thanks for stopping by!  I will be tackling it with you for the next 6 weeks!

Why do I drive an old car?

I love my car.

1992 Honda Accord.

Every now and again I think how nice it would be to drive a NEW car, one without the standard-honda-rusting-around-the-wheel-wells car.

But then I consider all the facts….I’ve run my own numbers, but life has been a little too busy this week to detail them all for you, so instead I’m posting someone else’s experience….

I drive an old car because it means I have a CHOICE in how many hours I want to work…I don’t have to work MORE hours just to pay for a new car….giving me time to create, to love, to help and to BE.

Found it here:

http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2009/01/21/why-i-drive-a-13-year-old-car/

**

I recently had a talk with a friend about why I haven’t purchased a new car. He can’t understand why I still drive a 1995 Geo Prizm. I can afford to buy a new car, but I choose not to. The fact is, driving an older car saves me money!

To prove my point, I ran some numbers. I was surprised by how much money I’ve saved by driving this car for so long.

Used vs. new
I bought my Geo Prizm in 1995 with 5,000 miles on it. It now has 140,000 miles on it and still runs fine. I paid off the car in 1999. It is now 2008. I haven’t had a car payment in nine years.

How much has this saved? Our payments for this car were $250 a month. Over nine years, I’ve gone 108 months without making a payment. At $250 a month, that’s a savings of $27,000.

Over the lifetime of the car, I’ve spent less than $2000 in repairs. Subtracting this from my savings still leaves me with $25,000 extra over buying a new car right after the Prizm was paid off.

Using past history as a guide, I can assume that my car will need more repair as time goes on. The most recent repair cost me $1,000. Let’s assume the worst and say I would spend $1,000 a year for every year that I keep the car from this point forward. Now, let’s compare that to the cost of buying a new car.

Assume that I could buy a newer car for about the same $250 payments I had on my Prizm. (I think that number is a little low, but let’s just assume.) That means my annual cost for a new car would be $3000. If we figure that I’ll spend $1000 a year repairing the Prizm, it still saves me $2000 a year over buying a new car. If I were able to keep the car for four more years, that would add $8000 to the $25,000 I’ve already saved.

I will have basically saved $33,000 by driving my old car for a total of 17 years.

Other savings
But wait! That’s not all! I’ve also saved money in several other ways not accounted for in the numbers above. Some examples:

  • Cheaper insurance
  • No down payment
  • I’ve freed up money so that I didn’t have to take on as much debt for other expenses

I’ve also kept the Prizm long enough that the items I did have to replace early on for the car are now covered by a lifetime warranty. Any time my starter, alternator, struts, or brake pads wear out, I can get replacement parts for free from Autozone. I can fix the car for just the cost of labor, or fix them myself.

There are some drawbacks to having an older car. I once had to have the car towed, and then was without a vehicle for five days while it was being repaired. I also spent a few weekends doing work on the car myself in order to keep costs down. The car is starting to rust. And, of course, it no longer has that new car smell.

I didn’t include the cost of oil changes or tires in the numbers for repairs. I figured this was normal wear-and-tear that would have occurred no matter which car I drove.

My goal is to drive the Geo Prizm for another four years. I am going to put away $300 a month. (I’m putting away $300 instead of $250 because the price of cars has gone up since 1995.) I’m putting this money in an ING Direct account to use for car repairs and a down payment on another used car. If this works out, I should have $10,400 set aside for a down payment on my next car, and will have spent an additional $4000 in maintenance for my current car.

I realize this might not work for everybody. And who knows? My next car might not be as good as the Prizm has been. But numbers like these are why I have opted not to buy a new car yet. I have better things to do with my money than to keep up with the Joneses.

J.D.’s note: I think Joel’s story is awesome. Though I complain incessantly about how much I want a new Mini Cooper, the fact is I’m following Joel’s plan, too. I’ll drive my Ford Focus into the ground. This story reminds me of Dave Ramsey’s Drive Free, Retire Rich. Photo by Jami Dwyer.

5 day challenge – DAY 5 of Beans and Rice

If you have ever felt like you’re here for a reason, for something bigger than yourself, you owe yourself the courtesy of at least exploring that.

What is woven into your DNA, and by whom?

What work is waiting for you that is connected to LIFE?

**

I know this for sure.  We have one major choice in life.

Life or Death

That’s it.

Long story short is life, truly living, is being connected to a source that is powerful enough to create something from nothing, to move the seasons in and out, and provide for all living things.

Death is not knowing, striving for something that ends with darkness.

When I chose Life, my perspectives changed on a lot of things.  THINGS, status, title, started to hold very little weight.  Relationships, sharing, caring and love started to mean more.  You can read a little something about that here:  http://repurposed.wordpress.com/repurposed-life/

Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus.

Saving is all his idea, and all his work.

All we do is trust him enough to let him do it.

It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing!

No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.

on the advent of Day 5, I already know that I eat too much…..I eat more food than my body needs and shame on me.

With all the resources I have at hand, I abuse them by taking more than my share.   That changes today.

I haven’t been all that hungry on Beans & Rice & Oatmeal….and I think I figured out why.  It doesn’t TASTE good.

I am more addicted to TASTE than the food.  I let the TASTE of food determine how much I eat vs. what I really need to keep living.

I choose food based on a momentary pleasure.

I am certainly not advocating eating a restricted diet like this for anyone….we’ve been taking in less than 600 calories a day….that is NOT HEALTHY either.

But I will pay more attention to WHY I’m eating.  Is it for taste or because I’m hungry?

Back to regular programming next week – thanks for making this journey with me…!

5 day challenge – DAY 4 of Beans and Rice

With almost 170 views on yesterday’s post, it seems as though the Beans & Rice challenge is resonating with some out there….if each one of you reading is impacted just enough to DO something…anything…we can see change come….and hey….thanks for reading!

Here’s what it comes down to.  I’m not overtly verbal about what I believe on this blog but I do hold beliefs consistent with Christianity.  I am a Christ follower, but find the word Christian to be nauseating most days because of what that word has come to mean..

…. you won’t usually hear me trying to convince you that your views are wrong just because they are different from mine, but I do try to live in harmony with what I believe and detail that for you here..

…Welcome to Day 4 of Beans & Rice….

beans3

I’m still struggling to know what to write about the challenge.  I CAN’T SOLVE THE WORLD’S problems….

…yesterday I got mail from Life Today talking about the desperate need for water somewhere in the world….it’s not just food that people need, it’s access to fresh drinking water….

…how could the world have let this happen……how can we be soooo comfortable, so over indulgent and not see the needs around us…? ( in our own city and across the world…)

….how could we continue on our merry way without realizing that every article of clothing, a lot of foodstuffs, many knick-knacks we buy in the name of consumerism, actually exploit workers somewhere in the world.  We can’t possibly follow through every purchase we make to know it’s true roots….

If you haven’t seen it before the video The Story of Stuff might open your eyes a little….I challenge you to find time to watch it.

I found this and liked this guys’ writing…it sounds like something I may have written to challenge people in their own thoughts of what being a Christ Follower looks like:

The ‘Following Jesus’ Manifesto

  1. Stop talking about Jesus. Just stop. If we loved the people around us half as much as we say we love Jesus the rest of this manifesto would be entirely redundant.
  2. Live a secret life. Invest the time, effort and vulnerability necessary to delve deeply into the scripture and prayer. Spend long periods of time in stillness. There is no shortcut to this, there is no other way. Without a deep and secret life we soon find ourselves talking about Jesus instead of being like Jesus.
  3. Stop pretending. I’m a Christian, and I suck. So do you. Let’s get that out of the way, shall we?
  4. Give more than you get. There will always be more than enough.
  5. Be present for those around you. Following Jesus has nothing to do with your work, your resume or your income. In fact, nothing that matters does.
  6. Treasure broken-ness. Our broken places are sacred spaces in our heart. Honour them. Value them. In doing so you love the unlovely, publicly declaring the beauty of God’s image in everyone. Greet the broken with comfort and cool water.
  7. Throw a party.
  8. Know Jesus well enough to recognize him on the street. This is rather important, because he can always be found on the street – and he usually looks more like a pan-handler than a preacher.
  9. Accept ingratitude and abuse as a fixed cost. Embrace them, and then go the extra mile.
  10. If you follow Jesus, you will anger religious people. This is how you will know.
